This is a Short Film I was involved with filming over Christmas 2015. There were some complications and so the film was scrapped. However I was responsible for recording the Foley and the Voice Over and I felt it was a shame to just let the audio files sit in a digital folder and remain there, forever unused. So I took that audio and put it into Pro Tools and made an audio short film. Or as I have come to call it: an Audio Film. It still tells the story and the Director liked it.

I do have to give credit to Adam Wayne Gistard and MaderaDelEste Films for the wonderful, though loud, screams that can be heard in the story, I downloaded the files from FreeSound.

I have read up on recording Foley for film and one of the key points that is made is that the foley is supposed to support the action in a scene and make it look and sound like a natural world. The Foley is not supposed to be the star. It is not supposed to be noticeable. This was in my mind while we were recording the foley. However when this became an Audio Film with all the emphasis on what the audience hears rather than what they see, the manner in which the foley should be delivered suddenly, and drastically, changes. It was a problem I faced while mixing the audio. I needed the sounds to be louder than what I could achieve without adding too much hiss or distortion to the tracks. This is why it is quiet. This project started as a trial for me creating this style of film so at least now I can bare in mind these issue that I faced and make sure they do not occur in my next production.

Update: The video on the left is the original audio film I made from December 2015, the video on the right is the Remixed version I edited in December 2016 as a way of testing new ideas I have been learning in post production sound. I added some ambience of streets, footsteps, and another scream. I also mixed the levels better than before and added some effects, now the narrator sounds more sinister and his dialogue moves between two locations, a warehouse and a family house.

Below is a copy of the script (on the left) and the foley (right) for each segment to the film. I realise that without being on location during filming or having images on the screen makes it almost impossible for someone to instantly understand what each sound that is present actually is. Another goal for future projects is to make the sounds more recognisable.

Script

Jingle Bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh.

Christmas is a time of joy, and happiness. Families get together, Choirs sing their carols and children await the day they get to open their presents.

But in todays world, kids who have been naughty still get their presents. Families who have done bad things still celebrate just like anyone else would.

The idea of putting coal into children's stockings never seemed to actually happen. So Dr. Nickolas decided to take matters into his own hands.

To those that are naughty, to those that are nasty, should be wary of Dr. Nickolas.

'Cause Dr. Nickolas likes to remind those that Christmas is supposed to be a happy and rewarding time of year.

And if you are undeserving of that, then he will leave you a little surprise...
